Teaching tips – Part 2: Be a rockstar at your campus

WHY ARE MY COLLEAGUES SO POPULAR WITH THE STUDENTS?

HERE ARE THREE TIPS FOR NEW TEACHERS!

🌟 Sometimes it seems like the other teachers at your campus are rock stars with the students. Children are chatting and high-fiving your colleagues but seem shy around you. Are they afraid of you? Is there anything you can improve?

👉 These kinds of feelings might make you feel like an outsider at your campus. To help you feel more like a part of your school family, we have some suggestions for you. Click on the pictures below for more!

🧑‍🏫 By personalizing your students’ learning experiences, you demonstrate a commitment to fostering their growth. It enhances student engagement, motivation, and achievement by making learning more relevant, meaningful, and accessible to all learners. Let’s make education the coolest adventure ever!

ARE YOU READY FOR THE NAME GAME CHALLENGE❓

🔹 You can do it!
Twenty names per class is a lot to remember! However, taking the time to learn your students’ names can really go a long way in building good rapport with your class. There are many different name activities you can do for the first few weeks to help you, like word association (Anh likes apples, Bao likes bananas). If you’re an expat teacher in Vietnam, don’t worry about pronunciation at first; even mistakes can bring laughter!

🔹What can you win?
In addition to building respect for the teacher, knowing a student’s name can also help with discipline 😉. Addressing a rambunctious student by name yields better results than ‘Hey you!’ When you get to know your students, your whole teaching experience will jump to the next level. Students will chat with you in the elevator, sharing what they got up to for fun or asking about your pets. Occasionally you may step into a classroom to a hearty cheer! While it might seem like a lot at first, learning those names can help make your time at your school that much more rewarding.

😜 USE HUMOR AND POSITIVITY IN THE CLASSROOM

🔹 Should class be fun?
It can help to try to incorporate humor and positivity into your lessons with students. Your students have probably been busy at work or school all day. Feel free to joke around with them, or even play a quick game if you’re losing their attention. A lighthearted approach can create a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, making students feel comfortable and engaged. If they are comfortable in class, their ability to learn improves. If they are enjoying the learning experience they are more likely to take part in activities, ask questions and try something new that they otherwise might shy away from.

🔹 Is there such a thing as too much fun?
Bringing a sense of humor to the classroom also helps build a connection between you and your students. However, be sure to maintain a balance between having fun in class and achieving your learning goals; you don’t want to distract your students from the lesson. Also, be mindful of any cultural differences you may experience and avoid offensive or inappropriate humor. By infusing your teaching with a touch of lightheartedness and positivity, you can foster a more enjoyable and productive classroom experience for your students.

🧑‍🏫 TAILOR YOUR LESSONS TO YOUR STUDENTS

🔹Update your subject matter
Are you struggling to capture your students’ attention and make learning meaningful for them? Gear up for classroom awesomeness by tailoring lessons to your students’ interests. Unleash the power of K-pop, sports, cartoons, manga, or video games. Connect with their passions and watch their engagement skyrocket! It also helps to use a variety of teaching methods and strategies. For example, incorporate visual aids, hands-on activities, group discussions, or songs and videos to engage students with different preferences.
