Hanoi
Hanoi is the capital city of Vietnam with an estimated population of around 8 million people and half that many motorbikes. It is the commercial, educational and cultural center of northern Vietnam with more museums and art galleries than anywhere else in the country. Famed for its many lakes and scenic views it also has a fantastic street food and restaurant scene. Located in the heart of the north, in the red river delta, the city is a wonderful clash of the old history of Vietnam and the new economic boom of commerce and industry.
Local Attractions
Tourists visit Hanoi to experience the quaint old quarter as well as the many lakes, pagodas and historical buildings scattered through the city. There are many well maintained museums such as the Vietnamese Women’s Museum and the Vietnamese Museum of Ethnology. Additionally, you cannot visit Hanoi without seeing the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the Temple of Literature.
Hanoi is also the gateway to the north of Vietnam and an excellent hub from which to visit Sapa and the beautiful highlands in the north or the spectacular Ha Long Bay in the Eastern Sea.
Local Cuisine
As good as the food is everywhere else in Vietnam, Hanoi surely is the culinary capital with an overwhelming amount of top class restaurants and street food areas. The most renowned dishes in the north include Bún Chả (Barbecued Pork with Rice Vermicelli), Phở (rice noodle broth with herbs and beef), Bánh Cuốn (Steamed Rice Rolls), Chả Cá (Grilled Fish with Dill and Turmeric) and Bún Cá (Fish Noodle Soup).
