Is an online interview "less difficult" than an offline interview?

An online interview is simply how recruiters meet candidates using an internet app or website. Some common platforms you’ll encounter are Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Meet, and similar tools.

Many companies have really embraced online interviews lately, and it’s easy to see why: they’re incredibly convenient.

Not only do they save candidates the hassle of traveling, but they also offer a lot of flexibility, making it much easier for both the recruiter and candidate to find a time that works.

Understanding these benefits, VUS also uses this method to find great potential candidates. We believe that online interviews not only make the recruitment process faster and more efficient but also enable our candidates to easily participate in interviews, no matter where and when they are.

Offline and online interviews share the same purpose – to evaluate your potential. However, online interviews often demand more in terms of technical preparation. Read on for essential tips to master your online interview, covering everything from equipment setup to choosing the perfect background.

4 Simple Steps Checklist for a Successful Interview

1) Check Your Tech Gear and Connection

Before the interview, test your webcam and microphone using the appropriate app (e.g., Microsoft Teams) to ensure good video quality and clear audio. Don’t forget to check that your battery will last the entire interview and plug in your device if needed.

Note: Prioritize using a laptop or desktop computer for online interviews. Other devices, such as tablets or phones may limit your operational capabilities and have smaller screens, making it difficult to see details clearly.

You should check your internet speed first. If it’s unstable, consider connecting directly to your router using an Ethernet cable for an even more stable connection, rather than relying solely on Wi-Fi.

Also, avoid using public Wi-Fi (like in schools or coffee shops) as it’s often unstable due to many users connecting at once.

💡 Tip: Prepare a 3G/4G hotspot as a backup. This ensures that if your primary internet connection unfortunately has trouble, you can still attend the interview.

2) Arrange a Bright and Distraction-Free Background

Make sure your face is well-lit from the front (not behind) your webcam. Choose a plain and professional background, such as a white wall, a bookcase, or utilize the virtual background templates available on the platform.

You should put your phone on silent and let housemates or family know you’ll need quiet time during the interview.

💡 Tip: Sitting near a window will allow you to utilize natural light. If your home doesn’t have a window, you can also turn on a selfie light or a lamp on your table.

3) Appearance Matters

Many candidates mistakenly think they can wear anything when attending an online interview. In fact, your attire is one of the things that creates a recruiter’s first impression of you.

Try to wear a formal outfit and brush your hair (you may also want to shave if appropriate).

💡 Tip: Choose an outfit that makes you feel confident and professional, ensuring it contrasts subtly with your background to make you stand out.

4) Use Engaged Body Language

Showing confidence and professionalism makes the employer feel respected. At the same time, because you cannot meet face-to-face, it can be harder for the employer to feel positive energy from you. Therefore, you need to show more enthusiasm than usual.

Make sure you are sitting up straight with your shoulders back and head up. Don’t forget to make eye contact by looking directly into the camera. Avoiding eye contact can give interviewers the impression you’re disengaged or unsure.

However, it’s natural and perfectly acceptable to occasionally break eye contact when you’re thinking, recalling information, or taking a brief pause.

This creates a more authentic interaction rather than a constant eye contact that might feel uncomfortable.

💡 Tip: Treat the camera lens as your recruiter’s eyes. Don’t look at your own image; this ensures genuine eye contact and shows full engagement.

We hope these tips help you stand out to recruiters. Always remember to be yourself, because ultimately, what recruiters truly value are your abilities and your character.

We’re confident that your careful preparation and professionalism will make you shine and become a strong candidate. We wish you a successful interview!
