👩🏫 Teaching entails more than just subject knowledge; it also requires nurturing, guiding, and understanding child psychology – skills that overlap with the demands of parenting.
Ms. Dang Thi Thanh Nga’s experience as an English teacher at VUS Nguyen Duy Trinh has given her valuable insights into education of children, thus easing her transition to motherhood. Through teaching, Nga has learned 3 key lessons applicable to parenting:
🐟 1. ‘...if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.’ - Albert Einstein
Encountering various learners helps Nga understand that each individual is unique, with their own strengths. Therefore, instead of being caught up in the question of ‘introversion or extroversion’, it’s better to focus on whom we should direct our attention to. To Nga, that is her child, her students, and herself. From then, she eliminates comparison, sets reasonable expectations, and everything becomes more manageable.
📖 2. Learning is a lifelong process
To Nga, learning isn’t beneficial only for herself but also for her child and students. Knowledge isn’t limited to books alone, you can also learn from the experiences and the people around you. In Nga’s case, she learns from her child and students. Children are fascinated by every little thing, their curiousity is how they can soak up information rapidly. As adults, we can also adopt their curious mindset to approach learning.
🙏 3. Be calm, be calm, and… be calm
It matters that you repeat this three times. No question is stupid; what seems trivial to one can be significant to another. That’s why patience is key to children’s education. Just as there are various ways to connect the dots, children ask various questions to grasp a concept. Similarly, as a mother, Nga also faces endless questions and sometimes Oscar-worthy tantrums from her child. She allows them to make mistakes and guides them towards the right path.
Teaching benefits not only teachers who are on the journey of motherhood but also everyone by imparting valuable skills and insights applicable to various aspects of life. Still, motherhood is a challenging journey learned through experience. No one is born a mother nor there are schools teaching you how to be one. Therefore, as Mother’s Day approaches, why not honor their dedication by clearing this Sunday for a special date with our wonderful mothers?
