I. 101 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT TẾT TRUNG THU
The Mid-Autumn Festival, known as Tết Trung Thu in Vietnam, is a traditional East Asian celebration held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, typically in September or October. In Vietnam, it combines Chinese influence with local customs and features traditions such as sharing mooncakes, parading with colorful lanterns, and enjoying performances like lion and dragon dances. The festival is a time for family reunions, expressing gratitude for the harvest, and celebrating under the full moon. It holds a central place in Vietnamese culture, fostering togetherness, and cultural traditions are observed with enthusiasm throughout the country.
II. CHINA ALSO CELEBRATES MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL, WHAT’S SO DIFFERENT?
Though similar in many aspects, the symbols and figures associated with the Mid-Autumn Festival in Chinese and Vietnamese cultures reflect their respective legends and narratives. While Chang’e and the Jade Rabbit are central to Chinese culture, chú Cuội and chị Hằng are important figures in Vietnamese culture, each contributing to the unique identity and symbolism of the festival in their respective traditions. These differences highlight the rich diversity of cultural interpretations and expressions of the Mid-Autumn Festival across East Asia.
III. LIKE ANY OTHER HOLIDAYS, LET’S CELEBRATE WITH VUS!
One of the key traditions during Tết Trung Thu in Vietnam is the sharing of mooncakes, which are round pastries filled with various ingredients such as lotus seed paste, red bean paste, or salted egg yolks. These mooncakes are given as gifts to family members, friends, and business associates. Haven’t tried mooncakes yet? No worries! You will get some on the day of Mid-Autumn at your campus!
Another popular custom is the making and carrying of colorful lanterns, especially among children. Lanterns come in various shapes and sizes, and during the evening of the festival, children parade with their lanterns, creating a beautiful and festive atmosphere. Lion and dragon dances are also common performances during the Mid-Autumn Festival, along with other cultural activities and games. The lantern decoration has always been an intriguing part of Trung Thu. Tag along with your students and craft some eye-catching lanterns!
In addition to these traditions, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for families to reunite, offer prayers, and express gratitude for the year’s harvest. It is a joyous occasion celebrated with delicious food, music, and various festivities. The specific customs and traditions may vary from region to region within Vietnam, but the spirit of togetherness and reverence for the moon remain consistent throughout the country. This occasion, gather around at your VUS campus and have fun together under the full moon!
