I. Silent connections speak volumes
Are you familiar with nonverbal communication methods for creating a comfortable learning environment?
First and foremost, the simplest and most effective way is to use a smile – just like when we greet new students with a smile and ask about their well-being. This approach helps students feel more comfortable and integrate into the class faster.
In addition, use body language such as eye contact, gestures, and body movements. Specifically, looking straight at the students while explaining, or nodding in agreement when they answer, will show care, respect, and empathy for the students. Students will feel encouraged and motivated to continue participating in the discussion.
Therefore, to build a stronger connection with students and create a positive learning environment, teaching assistants should always smile and welcome students to class!
II. 3 things to avoid in communication as a teaching assistant!
1. Avoid calling students “Nó”
Just like “it” in English, “nó” can be used to refer to a non-human subject or object, but using it to refer to a person is considered inappropriate and disrespectful. That’s why we should use their names or call them “các bé” or “các con” (“little kids”) when communicating with parents.
2. Do not compare students to each other in front of parents.
This not only makes parents uncomfortable but can also demotivate students. Instead of making comparisons, we can point out the progress that students have made during the learning process and encourage them to strive harder.
3. Avoid pointing fingers at parents and students.
This not only lacks respect but can also create tension in the relationship between TAs, parents, and students. Instead of using actions that show authority, we should focus on creating connections and communicating information in a respectful and polite manner.
Proper communication is an important factor that helps teaching assistants build connections with parents and students. Therefore, pay attention to your communication style, avoid small mistakes, and strive to become a talented and refined teaching assistant.
