The city center feels modern and lively, with apartment buildings, supermarkets, cafés, restaurants, convenience stores, and international schools. Daily life here is quite similar to Ho Chi Minh City, with busy streets and plenty of activity that continues into the evening.

Move a little further out, and the atmosphere changes. You’ll find local neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, open spaces, and industrial zones. These areas are quieter and more residential, offering a more provincial feel while still being close to essential services.

Whether you prefer the lively rhythm of the city center or the slower and more peaceful pace of life, Thu Dau Mot always has a way to make you feel at home.

What is daily life really like in Thu Dau Mot for expatriate teachers?

Moving around the city

In Thu Dau Mot, local people get around mostly by motorbike. As roads in central areas are a bit narrowed and slightly busy at some points of time, they are generally still safe for walking.

However, some outer areas may have more large trucks and lorries, so they may not be ideal for hanging out, especially at night. For those who are not familiar with riding a motorbike, taxis and Grab are recommended options for daily transportation.

An active lifestyle after work

Similar to Ho Chi Minh City, Thu Dau Mot offers a variety of entertainment and leisure options. For teaching staff who enjoy staying active, the city has many fitness choices, from well-known gym brands such as California Fitness to local gyms. Football fields, pickleball courts, and swimming clubs are also available, making it easy to maintain an active lifestyle after work. Although Thu Dau Mot provides different workout options, some facilities may not be as modern or well-equipped as those in Ho Chi Minh City.

For weekend plans, expatriate teachers can explore several nearby attractions, including Đại Nam Theme Park, Dầu Tiếng Reservoir, as well as local pagodas and churches. The city also has a range of bars, pubs, and clubs mainly located around the central areas. However, nightlife in Thu Dau Mot is not as lively as in Ho Chi Minh City, and many places usually close around 9 p.m.

Daily needs within easy reach

For everyday essentials, Thu Dau Mot has many convenience stores throughout, including GS25, 7-Eleven, and Circle K. Expatriate teachers can also find large supermarkets such as GO! and Becamex near the campus, making grocery shopping simple and convenient. Besides, there are many local shops offering Western-imported goods and spices for those who enjoy cooking at home.

The city also has a wide range of electronics stores, such as Dien May Xanh and The Gioi Di Dong, along with local clothing shops and well-known brands like Viettien, Adidas, and Nike, helping teachers settle into daily life with ease. Access to healthcare is also convenient, with pharmacies available widely and international hospitals located within approximately 20–30 minutes from the city center.

While Thu Dau Mot may feel quieter and more reserved compared to central Ho Chi Minh City, this slower pace is also part of its charm. However, with time, expatriate teachers can begin to experience the warmth of the local community, where neighbors and residents are often kind, thoughtful, and welcoming, especially around VUS campuses.

Local community: ⭐⭐⭐

A closer expat community
