GETTING SPOOKY IN THE CLASSROOM

Halloween is right around the corner! Celebrated on October 31st, it’s a day full of spooky costumes, delicious treats, and creative activities that kids love. Since students are already excited about the holiday, why not bring that enthusiasm into the classroom? Combining their love for Halloween with engaging activities can make learning fun and educational at the same time. Here are three creative, Halloween-themed activities that can be easily adapted to different classrooms, along with a special look at one activity that will be held at VUS!

1. Halloween Tic-Tac-Toe

This fun and crafty game will delight students while improving their strategic thinking and creativity.

What to Prepare:

  1. Orange and white tissue paper and green pipe cleaners (for crafting pumpkins)
  2. Candy pieces (for wrapping inside the pumpkins)
  3. Tic-tac-toe boards (printable templates or drawn on the floor)

How to Organize:

  1. Have students wrap their candy in their tissue paper (the pumpkin body) and tie it shut with a green pipe cleaner (the pumpkin stem)
  2. Let them personalize their pumpkins with markers or stickers to give them a fun, spooky twist.
  3. Students will then use these pumpkins to have fun playing tic-tac-toe in teams.

You and the TAs will help students craft their pumpkins and supervise the games. This activity is great for enhancing:

  1. Fine motor skills (cutting and decorating pumpkins)
  2. Strategic thinking and problem-solving (playing tic-tac-toe)
  3. Collaboration and communication (working with peers)

2. Spooky Story Fill-in-the-Blanks

This activity helps students flex their writing and imagination skills by creating their own eerie stories with a fun, Halloween twist.

What to Prepare:

  1. Pre-made spooky story templates with fill-in-the-blank sections (e.g., character names, objects, locations)
  2. Halloween-themed word banks (words like “ghost,” “pumpkin,” “haunted,” etc.)

How to Organize:

  1. Distribute the fill-in-the-blank story templates to the class.
  2. Have students fill in the blanks with words from the Halloween word bank, either individually or in pairs.
  3. Once finished, ask students to share their spooky stories with the class, creating a mini “story time.”

This creepy take on Mad Libs helps students enhance their vocabulary development by using themed word banks. It also sharpens their creativity and imagination through writing a unique story, and gives them a chance to improve their public speaking and listening skills when sharing stories.

3. Halloween Charades

A lively and interactive game, Halloween Charades will get students moving and laughing, while improving their communication skills.

What to Prepare:

  1. A list of Halloween-themed actions or characters (e.g., “acting like a witch,” “pretending to be a ghost,” “trick-or-treating”)
  2. An eerie container to draw the actions from

How to Organize:

  1. Divide the class into small groups and explain the rules of charades.
  2. One student will draw a card from the container and act out the Halloween-themed action or character without using words.
  3. The rest of the group will try to guess the correct answer within a time limit.
  4. Rotate so that everyone has a chance to act and guess.

This activity enhances communication skills by encouraging students to express ideas without using words. It also enhances teamwork and cooperation as your students work together to guess the answer. Confidence and creativity will also be improved when students act out characters in front of their peers.

Conclusion

By incorporating these engaging Halloween-themed activities, teachers can create a classroom environment that is both fun and educational. VUS will be providing teachers with everything they need to host Halloween Tic-Tac-Toe in class this year, and our students will have a blast! Join VUS for your opportunity to partake in similar fun activities throughout the year. Whether it’s through crafting, storytelling, or acting, students will enhance their communication, creativity, and collaboration skills—all while enjoying the excitement of Halloween!
