Halloween is right around the corner, and we’re here to help you get the most out of this autumn festival. Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos have roots based in celebrating the harvest and honoring the dead. Here in Vietnam, however, we tend to focus on dressing up, eating candy, and having fun watching scary movies!
Let’s go through some of our recommendations below!
1. Looking for a terrifying time with a group of friends?
Check out one of HCMC’s escape rooms! Have a go at Inside Xcape in Phu Nhuan District. Bring a group of friends to work your way through the puzzles. You could also try Real Escape in District 10, which has some spooky offerings on hand. Remember to bring a Vietnamese friend to help with ticket booking and some of the puzzles inside. Many of the modern shopping malls around town will also have halloween themed decorations and events.
2. Want to watch a frightening flick?
Another fun Halloween activity is getting scared on the big screen. Grab some popcorn and your best friends and get ready to jump out of your seat! Creepy creatures have long been part of this festive season. Check out our recommendations below:
Haunting theaters this month:
Death Whisperer 2: In a world shrouded by darkness, a relentless force seeks retribution, undeterred by boundaries or morality.
Blink Twice: When tech billionaire Slater King meets cocktail waitress Frida at his fundraising gala, he invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. As strange things start to happen, Frida questions her reality.
- The Sisters (Cám): A series of unexplained missing cases and disturbing deaths start to occur in a faraway village when the Chief’s dead daughter comes back to life, unveiling shocking secrets of the village’s Forest Demon and the ritual of human sacrifice related to the prosperity of the Chief’s family.
Classics that will still give you a fright:
- Rosemary’s Baby (1968): A young couple trying for a baby moves into an aging, ornate apartment building on Central Park West, where they find themselves surrounded by peculiar neighbors.
- Child’s Play (1988): A dying serial killer transfers his consciousness into a popular kids doll using voodoo. A struggling single mother gifts her six-year-old son the much sought-after doll for his birthday, and the doll slowly begins to show its true colors.
- Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984): After being announced dead and taken to a morgue, Jason Voorhees spontaneously revives, escapes from the hospital, and stalks a group of friends renting a house in the countryside near Crystal Lake.
This Halloween, revisit a favorite spooky movie, or maybe scare yourself with something new!
3. Ready to dress up and have a night on the town?
Bui Vien Street in District 1 is sure to be packed with revelers ready to dance the night away. Nguyen Hue Walking Street will also have tons of people in costumes and is a great place to stroll around, grab a coffee and watch the creatures pass by.
For something more off-the-wall, Vietnam Pro Wrestling will be hosting Brawl Hallow’s Eve! Root for your favorite monsters as they hit the ropes!
If you’re looking forward to some spooky sips, The Intercontinental will be having a Halloween-themed Gin Festival. Sky 9 Bar in Thao Dien will be hosting a Spooktacular Bash!
Most importantly, have some Halloween fun at your VUS campus! This year the VUS Halloween 2023 theme will be Funtasy Land! Many of the younger learners will dress up as vampires, witches, princesses, Iron Men, you name it! Throw on a costume yourself and have some fun in the classroom; your students will love it!
We hope you enjoy this haunted Halloween season as it continues to grow in popularity here in Vietnam. Have tons of fun, and don’t forget to share pictures of your experiences!
